Application of Pearl Pigment in the Automotive Paint

Automotive grade pearlescent material is a kind of pearlescent material with high weather resistance performance achieved through multi-layer coating technology and special surface treatment .Automotive-grade pearlescent pigments have extremely high light refractive index, pearlescent effect and viewing angle flash effect. Through rigorous artificial aging test, paint film adhesion, cross-cut knife detection and other processes, it has moisture resistance, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. High weather resistance and environmental protection performance, mainly used in automotive coatings (OEM original car OEM paint, high-end refinish paint), exterior coatings, other weather-resistant paints (metal fluorocarbon paint, coil paint, etc.).

The standard car paint includes the electrophoretic layer, the middle coating, the color paint layer and the varnish layer. The total thickness of the coating is generally controlled at about 100 microns. In the paint workshop , a layer of electrophoretic paint is attached to the metal body to prevent metal rust, which is what we often say as primer.

The middle coat is operated in a dust-free environment, and is applied on the electrophoretic layer to provide attachment conditions for the paint, which can enhance the corrosion protection of the car body. Then sprayed with paint, which is the color of the car body we saw. Pearlescent pigment, glittering aluminum powder and other pigments are doped in the color paint layer to achieve the effect of covering, color and glitter. The varnish is mainly used to improve the gloss, weather resistance, chemical resistance and mechanical scratches.

Initially, car topcoats were mainly black monochromatic paints, and then various colors appeared. A two-coat silver-white topcoat system (metallic pigment) containing metallic aluminum powder, which appeared in the 1970s, can give automotive metallic luster and quickly replace monochromatic paint systems. Pearlescent pigments were not used in automotive coatings until the mid-to-late 80s, and together with metallic pigments became the most common effect pigments. At present, there is a trend of replacing metallic pigments with pearlescent materials in the automotive coatings market. According to Axalta's global mass production car color popularity report, the world's most popular car color is white, accounting for 39%, of which pearlescent white accounts for 13%, while the popularity of pearlescent white in 2016 was 9%, pearlescent white The proportion has increased by 4%, and the penetration rate of pearlescent materials in the field of automotive coatings continues to increase.

In addition, people's increasing emphasis on environmental protection and health will further promote pearlescent materials to replace aluminum pigments. The environmental protection and safety of water-based coatings is the current trend of coatings development. The chemical reaction of metal pigments in water affects its weather resistance, and the water resistance of coatings needs to be improved through chemical reforms. However, the global industrialization of water-based aluminum pigments is currently slow and the development situation is not optimistic. Pearlescent materials are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and have good water resistance, which can meet and adapt to the preparation requirements of water-based coatings. It is expected to continue to replace metal pigments in the field of automotive coatings, with bright prospects.

There is a certain difference in the amount of paint used for each vehicle of different types (OEM original paint). Except for large passenger cars, it is generally 15-25kg, and the amount of paint used for a single vehicle is between 2.5-3kg, accounting 10-20% for the entire amount of paint used. Assuming that the amount of paint used in a single car is about 20kg, and the amount of pearlescent powder added in car paint is usually 2-5%, the amount of pearlescent paint used in a single car is about 0.4-1kg.
